Our nation has a unique opportunity to establish itself as the global leader in 21st-century energy policy. Innovation in energy policy must be a top priority of the United States over the next quarter-century.
An investment in alternative energy resources will pay dividends by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, by helping to repair our environment, and by improving our economy through quality job creation.
In addition, our dependence on fossil fuels from unstable regimes in the Middle East, South America and Central Asia is driving our foreign policy in ways which run contrary to our own long-term security interests and values.
We must focus our national priorities to:
- diversify our sources of energy
- increase our use of domestic sources of energy
- improve conservation and efficiency technologies and standards
There is perhaps no public policy area where more can be done to improve the lives of the next generation than through wise long-term energy policy.
